Police Detain Opposition Figures at Moscow Protest

Police detained protesters in Moscow, Russia, Sunday, July 14, during a protest to demand independent candidates be included on the ballot for local elections in September.

Russian police have detained more than 25 demonstrators outside the Moscow Election Commission headquarters after opposition candidates called for a sit-in protest following their exclusion from city council elections.

Opposition candidates Ilya Yashin, Lyubov Sobol and Yulia Galyamina were among those taken to police stations Sunday after several hours of peaceful protest.

Popular opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who had been released from 10 days of house arrest July 11, did not attend the protest.
