Police Detain Former Kyrgyz President, Prompting Protests

Kyrgyzstan’s ex-president Almazbek Atambaev was detained, Thursday, August 8, a day after the raid of his home that left one policeman dead and nearly 80 people injured. The detention prompted a clash between supporters of the ex-president and police at a blocked section of the road on the way to Atambaev’s residence.

Russia’s Interfax news agency and Kyrgyz media reported Thursday Atambaev was detained at his home in the village of Koi-Tash near the capital of Bishkek after at least one failed attempt.

Police stormed Atambaev’s compound after their first attempt to detain him overnight failed amid violent clashes with his supporters that also left dozens injured.
