Congress Plays Santa for Unions, Leaves Social Security in the Lurch

 

Just in time for the holidays, Congress approved the Social Security Fairness Act, gifting unions a $196 billion bonus over the next decade. The price tag? A Social Security trust fund already on life support.

Just the News reports that in a pre-holiday dash, Congress passed legislation granting extra Social Security benefits to workers whose municipal employers fell short on full contributions to the fund.

Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) couldn’t hide his frustration saying, “We just had a bunch of Republicans run on, ‘We have too much inflation because we’re spending too much money,’ and the first thing they do, even before they’re sworn in in January, is decide to spend another $20 billion.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) tried to inject some fiscal sanity by proposing gradual retirement age increases to offset costs. His amendment was swatted down faster than holiday travel delays. Paul called the law “absurd,” but Congress wasn’t in the mood for adulting.

The bill’s cheerleaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) – no surprise – declared victory for public workers like teachers and firefighters whose employers hadn’t fully funded Social Security.

Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that the trust fund will now run dry six months earlier – by 2034. That’s pretty soon, folks. And none of the lawmakers on either side of the aisle seem worried about it, especially Democrats, as they spend billions and billions on Ukraine, DEI and their climate change agenda.
