Australian Naval Ships Help Evacuate People from Bushfires

The first of thousands of residents and vacationers, who had been stranded on a beach in southeastern Australia by smoke and fire, landed near Melbourne, Saturday, January 4, after a 20-hour journey by ship.

Thousands of people have already fled their homes but some have waited too long.

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service has advised those who have not evacuated areas at risk that, “It is too late to leave. Seek shelter as the fire approaches.”
